A dynamic sector in the heart of Burgundy


    • With a €2 billion turnover, almost 5% of the French wood industry – Aprovalbois 2006
    • Close on 1 million hectares of woodland, i.e. 6,4% of the wooded area of mainland France – INSEE 2007
    • 4th region for its volume of growing stock ( 6th region for its surface area of forestry production)
    • 1st region for standing oak
    • 1st region for its production of Douglas fir: the production should grow from 300,000 to 1,000,000 m3 between now and 2020 – Aprovalbois 2006

Silviculture and forestry operations

    • the first region to be awarded the PEFC certificate in 2001
    • 1/3 of the Burgundy forests are PEFC certifiedPEFC-France 2007
    • The wood production is divided as follows: 40% construction, 20% for industrial use, and 40% for heating.

Primary use of wood

    • About 100 sawmills and a dozen mobile sawmills: 508,000 m3 sawn wood – Agreste 2007
    • The operation of slicing and unrolling – an important sector in Burgundy with 3 specialist companies on a European scale
    • Staves (barrel making) – 1st region in France thanks to the presence of numerous fine quality oak trees
    • Wood packaging – 3rd region in France
    • Panel manufacture – 3 factories producing fibreboard, hardboard and thin MDF
    • Carbonisation - presence of the French leader in this field
    • Wood for energy - an important but little used resource offering great opportunities

Secondary use of wood

    • Craftsmen, joiners - 283 cabinet-makers
    • Furniture and Shop-fitting-operation: Eco Design Bois Bourgogne, aims to create a range of eco-designed, innovative furniture made from certified wood
    • Joinery
    • Carpentry: trade favoured by the development of wooden constructions
    • Construction: Industrial manufacturers of wooden construction elements (Fargeot-Arbonis, POBI, Isoroy, SPTP…) and more than 130 technical research departments, architects and wood construction businesses – Recensement Aprovalbois 2009
    • Cooperage - one of only two cooperage training centres in France

4 recognised centres of rural excellence concerning wood Autunois-Morvan, La Roche en Brénil, Charitois area and La Machine.
