There are over 100 000 employees (not including those in the food-processing industry) in the different industrial production sectors of Burgundy.
Metalworking industry The largest regional employer ; 18,500 employees. You will find that the number of workers in this sector is higher than the national average. Ugine, Usinor Industeel, Imphy, Vallourec and nearly 600 other establishments work in the steel industry, or own ironworks and foundries. Burgundy is the fourth largest French region in the metalworking industry.
Chemistry and rubber, plastic and composite materials Once again, the number of workers in this sector (15,500 employees) exceeds the national average. Kodak, Michelin, Davey Bickford, Gates, Moll and over 200 other companies have chosen Burgundy’s efficient labour force and savoir-faire in this sector.
Mechanics This sector is the third largest employer of industrial workers (15,000 employees) and is both a traditional industry and a vehicle for technological innovation and advance (high-speed manufacture, advanced cutting techniques, etc.). Over 600 establishments manufacture capital goods in Burgundy, ranging from the biggest rotary digger shield in the world to precision mechanics.
Electric and electronic components Nearly 10,000 employees work for over 80 establishments which use the latest technologies, such as Schneider Electric, Thomson Passive Components-AVX and Pirreli Cables.
Household appliances and equipment The household equipment sector has a high density and diversity. Nearly 7,000 employees work for companies such as Thomson Multimedia, SEB and Hermes Métal, manufacturing furniture and household appliances such as televisions and video machines.
Pharmaceuticals and chemistry Groups such as Urgo-Fournier, Synthélabo and Merck Médication Familiale contribute in a major way to the base of subcontractors and development centres of Burgundy’s health industry.
